Areas of Focus
parent coaching
Current research in Early Intervention (birth-5) is revealing that the best teachers are parents and the best learning environments are in the child's natural setting. I most often work with clients for 1 hour each week which is only 2% of the time that child is awake during the week. Parents and caregivers typically spend the other 98% of the time with their toddler; therefore, I will focus on your family's everyday routines and coach you on how to best incorporate language and learning into your everyday environment.
autism spectrum disorder
I frequently hear parents say, "my child is in their own world" and they're not sure how to connect with them. I am trained in the More Than Words®- The Hanen Program® which is a parent training program designed to help parents better connect with their child with ASD or social communication deficits. I am so passionate about seeing parents connect with their children in more meaningful ways because it will directly impact their child's overall development. This program is a 12-week course designed for parents-only. Visit Hanen's website for more information or contact me directly. I also adapt this program for use in my one-on-one sessions with families.
feeding disorders
Many toddlers are picky eaters and some have food aversions. These aversions may be related to poor nutrition and even unwanted behaviors. Eating is an experience that engages all the senses and may be too overwhelming for some children. Picky eating is a normal phase for toddlers; however it becomes a concern if your child is eating less than 20 different foods, seems to avoid certain textures or colors, or the toddler doesn’t outgrow the phase. I am certified in AEIOU: An Integrated Approach to Pediatric Feeding. I hope to use this approach to make meal time more enjoyable for the whole family!
apraxia
Suspected Childhood Apraxia of Speech (sCAS) is a motor-planning disorder often characterized by primarily using vowel sounds, inconsistent speech productions, and/or groping behaviors while producing speech. Speech-language pathologists are typically the most highly trained professionals to diagnose and treat sCAS. Research also suggests that EARLY intervention is key, along with frequent sessions. If your child is social and seems to know what they want to say, but demonstrates difficulty getting the words out, it's a possibility they could be struggling with sCAS.
receptive and expressive language disorders
Vocabulary development in toddlers is of utmost importance as it directly relates to future language skills and academic performance. This includes understanding words and phrases used in their environment as well as using words to express themselves. I can help you target your child's ability to follow directions, complete tasks, and understand basic concepts. Together, we can work on appropriate ways for your child to express themself to you and with their peers.
About Me
Brianna Peterson, M.S., CCC-SLP
I absolutely love speech pathology and I'm passionate about developing young minds through play and meaningful relationships. I completed my bachelors and masters degree from an accredited school in the midwest and spent many years working in the school system. I have enjoyed San Diego for 5 years now and I can't see myself enjoying life quite as much anywhere else. The last two years, I have pored over everything related to Early Intervention. I love meeting children at such a young age and significant time in their lives. I enjoy empowering parents to have meaningful connections and provide language-rich environments all throughout the day. I have served hundreds of families and subsequently gained a wide variety of experiences with children who have mild to severe delays and disorders. I look forward to meeting you and creating a comprehensive therapy program just for you!
